Garça’s Fall from Grace: The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation’s comeback, Brazil, 2014

In 2014, the CBV,  (Brazilian Volleyball Confederation- Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol) was exposed by ESPN for a corruption scheme. Ary Graça Filho was the president of the CBV at the time of this scandal and was reportedly caught with illegal and unethical commissions that were received by the Banco do Brasil in the new sponsorship contract. The scandal surrounds multimillion-dollar Reais (the Brazilian currency) contracts with CBV board members. After ESPN released the article surrounding the scandal, Graça resigned from his position as president of the CBV on March 14th, 2014, and the largest sponsor of the CBV, Banco do Brazil threatened to end its partnership.

The committee Graça’s Fall from Grace: The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation’s Comeback, Brazil, 2014 will have delegates representing both regional and international volleyball organizations, sponsorship partners, CBV, ESPN, and FIVB. Through these characters, you will be tasked with creating a new reputation for the CBV after it has been tarnished by the corruption scandal that was released through ESPN. The delegates will be tasked with maintaining the CBV reputation, while also rebuilding the reputation to a newer level.

As you prepare for this committee, keep in mind that the reputation of Brazilian volleyball is on the brink of collapsing. The actions you decide to take to try and retain and build the reputation will cause different outcomes in both the international and regional volleyball world. Delegates may face challenges associated with the scandal regarding new performances, media backlash, public cases, and exposure. To be able to rebuild the legitimacy and sports performance of the Brazilian team, you have to be able to work together for the greater good of the reputation of the CBV. The DIAS of Graça’s Fall From Grace is excited to meet you at McMUN 2025 and see where you all take this committee.
