SDG 3: Good Health

World Health Organization (WHO)

Welcome to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being!

SDG 3 is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015, with a specific focus on healthy and sustainable lifestyles. Progress towards the target of healthy lives and the promotion of well-being on a global scale is done through the use of numerous indicators. Good health focuses on broader socioeconomic inequalities, urbanization, communicable diseases, and other emerging challenges. Over the course of McMUN 2023, delegates in this committee will focus specifically on the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health and works worldwide to keep the world safe, serve the vulnerable, and promote health and well-being for all.

This committee will focus on the issue of Accessibility to Healthcare for the LGBTQ+ Population. SDG 3 (WHO) will discuss this one topic but will encompass several deeper, more specific issues, which are outlined below. Delegates are expected to understand all aspects of LGBTQ+ healthcare and be ready to debate sub-topics under this topic.

The first sub-topic, “Discrimination and Stigma Against the LGBTQ+ Community”, will examine concepts such as how the discrimination LGBTQ+ folks face affects their access to basic healthcare, as well as the quality of the care they receive. The stigma surrounding sexuality and gender minorities prevents them from receiving the same amount of care as their cisgendered and heterosexual counterparts. The second sub-topic, “Mental Health Risks for the LGBTQ+ Population'', focuses on addressing the mental health issues and illnesses faced by the LGBTQ+ community and inspects these issues that occur at higher rates amongst those that identity as Queer. Societal attitudes and perceptions on gender and sexuality pose a great risk to those in the community, specifically LGBTQ+ youth. Finally, delegates will work together in solving “Socioeconomic Barriers to Healthcare''. This will examine many additional financial and economic barriers that LGBTQ+ people experience. Specifically, delegates will inspect the costs associated with being trasngender, attaining gender-confirmation surgeries, and other medical expenses that the majority of cis-het people are not faced with.

Delegates will be responsible for creating and enacting realistic strategies that will ensure any LGBTQ+ identifying individual has the resources and access that is needed in order to attain proper healthcare for their well-being. The aim of this committee is to attain increased equality for underrepresented and underserved populations, specifically for those who are gender and seuxality minorities in their countries.

The Dais is excited to meet all of the delegates at McMUN 2023! If you have any questions regarding the committee, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at gaecosoc@mcmun.org.
