For those in the movie industry, what are known as the “big five” film festivals are some of the most important events of the year. The Sundance, TIFF, Cannes, Venice, and Berlin film festivals each showcase a wide array of cinematic works while promoting cultural exchange and celebrating excellence in film. The two oldest and most prestigious of the big five, Cannes and Venice, have been attracting the most famous actors, filmmakers, and media executives in the world to their glitzy celebrations in early May and September respectively.
Traditionally, the film festivals are scheduled throughout the year so that film directors can choose which festival they wish to present their newest piece of work at. While the prestige of both festivals can be attributed as similar, this year is about to change it all. Both Cannes and Venice have decided to move their festivals for logistical and financial considerations… to the same dates! Contracts have been signed and the venues have been booked, and there is no turning back. It was only when their schedules were released to the public that executives on both sides came to realize the mishap. And so the unprecedented rivalry begins!
In this JCC, delegates will act as organizers, investors, and executives of the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, and will be tasked with planning and running their respective events. You will have to make difficult decisions about how to still turn a profit while maintaining your respective reputations, how to attract the most famous actors and directors, and how to navigate many unforeseen events for the duration of the festivals. The media industry has spiraled into chaos as actors, directors, and industry heavyweights are faced with the difficult decision of which festival to attend. Who will succeed in attracting the A-listers and who will forfeit their prestigious status and buckle under the pressure?
