Revisiting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: Indigenous Services Canada

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada was a body tasked with uncovering the wrongdoings that occurred under the “Indian” Residential School system. During McMUN 2023, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will take on a new form; indeed, seven years after the end of the TRC, the Canadian federal government has called a special meeting between Members of Parliament (MPs) and influential Indigenous Peoples (IPs) because the recommendations of the TRC are far from being implemented adequately.

This committee will reflect on the social, legal, and environmental inequities that continue to  disproportionately impact Canada’s Indigenous Peoples. Delegates will represent MPs and IPs as they work together to implement meaningful legislation to better the lives of Indigenous Peoples across the country. This special parliamentary session will not be without its challenges, but it will be a rewarding experience if delegates are able to come together to enact meaningful, but most importantly, actionable, legislation.
