In the Times of Harvey Milk

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors, 1978

Fellow Supervisors, Friends, Colleagues: as the San Francisco Examiner so poignantly put it, on November 28, 1978, San Francisco was a “city in agony” . The tragic loss of our beloved Mayor George Moscone and 5th District Supervisor Harvey Milk have shaken our city to its core. As the Board of Supervisors deliberates today, not only the eyes of the Castro District’s Gay community, nor just the eyes of the people of San Francisco  – but in fact, the entire nation’s eyes are upon us.

In this committee, delegates representing Supervisors and stakeholders on the City Board of San Francisco will be tasked with reconciling the consequences of the tragic death of one of the forefathers of Gay rights in California, the advent of the 1970s and 1980s subculture movements, and the looming crises facing San Francisco and its various communities.
