Viva la Revolución

El Ministerio de Educación de Chile, 2016

Following the fall of Pinochet and the establishment of democracy in Chile, education took a new priority for the Chilean people. With less risk of physical or political repercussions, students across the country have taken a stand for their rights - over and over again. Now, in 2016, students protest for the 5th time in 10 years, this time against the massive increases in tuition costs at the university level. Broken promises from politicians and soaring tensions between the police and the people are fresh in everyone’s mind as the air hums with calls for change. ¡Viva la revolución!

The goal of this committee is to address the issues pertaining to access to education in Chile 2016 by representing various educators, student leaders, and the ministers of education in Chile. Given the colonial beginnings as well as a history of oppression and corruption in Chile’s past, there is much work to be done in regards to full democratization, especially when it comes to education. Without accessible education, a newly democratized country such as Chile risks falling back into old ways. Delegates must consider the implications of the past when considering Chile’s future.
