Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD)

A: Bridging the gap between the brain network and physical biomedical infrastructure

B: Promoting the expansion of Environmental infrastructure in the wake of the climate crisis

The Committee on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) is a subsidiary body of the United Nations. Its main mission is to provide high-level, academic advice on science and technology issues as they relate to global development. In both topics, this committee’s focal point is the role of scientific information sharing in infrastructure projects. The first committee topic aims to address the critical issue of how to bridge the accessibility gap between the 'brain network' and the physical biomedical infrastructure necessary for implementing such knowledge. The ‘brain network’ refers to the UN's established knowledge-sharing forums for STEM professionals worldwide. The goal of the forums is to eradicate intellectual disparities across regions with the hopes of ensuring equal access to scientific understanding and advancements, specifically in the medical field. Despite the existence of numerous platforms for sharing medical precedents, many countries do not have the infrastructure needed to support utilizing the platform’s shared STEM knowledge. Therefore, this committee will explore inventive strategies to align intellectual resources of the brain network with the needed biomedical infrastructure to support STEM advancements. To enhance healthcare outcomes worldwide, delegates must find actionable solutions for all nations to benefit from the UN’s sharing forums to foster scientific programs universally.

The second topic addresses the pressing need for environmental infrastructure to reduce the impact on the climate. Environmental infrastructure are defined by any and all humanly devised solutions to prevent adverse effects on both human health and the environment. In the past few years, countries have invested in infrastructure in order to reduce impact on the environment and increase awareness. However, many countries still lack these infrastructures and face severe barriers to setting them up. In this committee, CSTD will need to find solutions to promote the installation of environmental infrastructure whilst understanding the many barriers which are faced by countries.
