Pro-Femmes Twese Hamwe

Women’s Mobilization in Post-1994 Rwanda

In 1994, Rwanda's streets were filled with blood as an unstable political situation between the Hutu and Tutsi communities devolved into a nightmare. In a short 100 days, tensions erupted into the massacre of over 800,000 members of the Tutsi population, leaving the nation deeply scarred. In the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and with the international community continuing to turn a blind eye on the events, it befell on local communities to begin the painful process of rebuilding Rwanda. Pro-Femmes / Twese Hamwe is a group that brings together different member associations that share the view that the road to peace is intertwined with gender equality. A nation cannot prosper and be free of oppression if its girls and women are kept out of its development. Delegates are invited to participate in this effort to simulate the decision-making process of this influential NGO in eradicating gender-based violence from Rwanda's households, promoting female education and employment and turning women into active members of society and leaders of reconciliation in their communities. In this regard, delegates will have to consider how changes in Rwanda's socioeconomic context can promote women's economic empowerment and how cooperation between the member associations can build a strong network throughout the country to promote advocacy on a broader scale. As this dialogue evolves, it is essential to consider Rwanda's larger role in African development, especially with looming crises such as the AIDS epidemic. Finally, this committee will also have to grapple with questions regarding the international community's role in Rwanda's future in light of global governance’s failure to act in the face of disaster.

*Delegations interested in this committee are highly encouraged to send women and BIPOC delegates to this committee if possible.
